Our philosophy
at Steenberg

Our vineyards thrive under ideal conditions, yielding wines of exceptional quality and character. From the meticulous care of our vines to the expert craftsmanship in our cellar, each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit of Steenberg.

01

Our Process

Our wines are made in the vineyard and cared for in the cellar.
We want our wines to tell the story of this very special pocket of land that we nurture, so our touch is as light as possible in the vineyards and in the cellar. Our environmentally friendly farming practices place regeneration at their heart and ensure our vines are rooted in thriving soils that produce healthy grapes of focus and clarity.

A low intervention approach in the cellar continues this golden thread, with the bottled wines expressing an eloquent sense of place.

02

our climate

Perhaps the biggest influence on the distinctiveness of our wines is our cool climate, a combination of strong, fresh ocean breezes — the farm is less than five kilometers from both the Indian and Atlantic oceans — low average temperatures, reliable winter rainfall and the helpful shadow of Steenberg mountain over our predominantly east-facing slopes. This confluence of factors allows for slower ripening periods, resulting in a deeper concentration of flavour in the grapes — ideal for creating complex, expressive wines with beautiful ageing potential.

03

our soils

There are 21 soil types in Steenberg’s vineyards, the majority being a combination of decomposed granite, flint and Table Mountain sandstone that are some of the oldest in the wine-growing world at 500-600 million years. Ancient, well-drained soils are ideal for our signature grape Sauvignon Blanc, while the clay substrate aids water retention and lessens our demand for irrigation.

04

our plantings

Steenberg has 55 hectares under vine, currently planted to seven varieties on 45 blocks. The star of the show is undoubtedly Sauvignon Blanc with just short of two-thirds, followed by Semillon, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo and Malbec.

05

on sustainability

We have been tending vines at Steenberg for over 340 years. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, from regenerative farming — including biodynamic and precision methods — to soil management, water conservation, native flora restoration and caring for our diverse wildlife.

our team

A love of Steenberg’s inimitable terroir lured Cellar Master Elunda Basson to Steenberg in 2019 following two decades making award-winning still and sparkling wines. Elunda has won a slew of accolades including top honours at the 2018 Vertex Awards. She is also a sought-after judge for the IWSC, Veritas and Cap Classique Challenge and has acted as Vice Chairman of the Cap Classique Society since 2017 and is the Chairperson of the SA Sauvignon Blanc Association.

Assistant Winemaker Thabile Cele joined Steenberg in 2025 following several harvests with the estate and a diverse international winemaking journey. Having worked with leading wineries across South Africa, Sonoma County, Germany’s Mosel Valley, Austria and New Zealand, she brings a global perspective and fresh energy to the Steenberg cellar team.

Vlok Hanekom grew up in the vineyards of the Northern Cape and spent his early professional years as a viticulturist in that area before planting the first vineyards in KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. At Linton Park in Wellington, Vlok honed his skills before joining Steenberg Vineyards in 2022.

Steenberg Cellar Master, Elunda Basson, joined in 2019, bringing over two decades of winemaking experience from Rickety Bridge, Nederburg, J.C. Le Roux and beyond. A Stellenbosch and Elsenburg graduate, she honed her craft locally and abroad, specialising in Cap Classique. At Steenberg, she oversees all winemaking, with a focus on Sauvignon Blanc, fine reds and her beloved Cap Classique. Elunda has earned top honours, including the 2018 Veritas Vertex Award, and serves as vice-chair of the Cap Classique Association and is the Chairperson of the SA Sauvignon Blanc Association. Passionate about wine, travel, and languages, she balances her professional achievements with family life and a love for good food and company.

Steenberg’s Viticulturist, Vlok Hanekom, joined in 2022 after a career spanning vineyards from Kakamas to Wellington. Growing up on his family farm in the Northern Cape, farming and wine became second nature. A Stellenbosch graduate in Viticulture and Agricultural Economics, he has worked with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and more, pioneering vineyards in KwaZulu-Natal and planting South Africa’s second-highest Sauvignon Blanc at Linton Park. Today, Vlok leads Steenberg’s farming operations, focusing on Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, while raising his family in Constantia. Off-duty, he enjoys time outdoors, braais, and making a mean potjie.

Assistant Winemaker Thabile Cele was appointed to the Steenberg winemaking team in 2025 following several harvests with the estate and a diverse international winemaking journey. A graduate of Elsenburg, with a postgraduate qualification in Biotechnology from CPUT, Thabile has gained hands-on experience with leading wineries across South Africa, as well as in Sonoma County, Germany’s Mosel Valley, Austria and New Zealand.

Passionate about the intersection of chemistry and nature, Thabile is fascinated by how vineyard, climate and winemaking decisions come together to create wines that express a unique sense of place. At Steenberg, she works closely with Cellar Master Elunda Basson across the estate’s portfolio of Sauvignon Blanc, fine red wines and Cap Classique.

Outside the cellar, Thabile enjoys spending time outdoors, whether hiking, exploring nature or simply taking a walk, and can often be found with a good book in hand.
